Renting a car for your vacation can be expensive, yet necessary. You need a car to be able to navigate throughout the city and visit the places you want to see, but all too often the process of acquiring a car is difficult and pricey. Don’t let it be! Follow these tips to ensure you get a deal on your car and have a fun-filled vacation without any worries.

1. Book in advance. The earlier you try to find your car, the better. You can save a lot of money just by booking two months in advance. During that time, continue to see if the price has gone down. You will get the lowest price this way, and if the price goes up you are locked in to the price at which you booked your car.

2. Consider smaller rental companies. By doing this, you are more likely to find better deals.

3. Pick up your car away from the airport. Taxes from the airport can add 10% more to the cost of your vehicle. Picking your car up a few blocks away can save you bundles.

4. Check with your insurance company to see what is already covered. If you personal insurance has collision and liability insurance, you will likely not need to purchase additional insurance from the rental company.

5. Go green! Drive a hybrid. Even if it is initially $10-$15 more expensive, you will save on gas in the long run!

The next time you need a rental car, you’ll want to make sure you take some of these steps to get the best deal possible. Whether it’s for vacation or just around town while your car is in the shop, it’s always best to shop around for the best deal. The best place to do that without a big hassle is online. Online car rental is fast and easy.

First, it’s best to have as much advance notice as possible when renting a car. In some situations, such as when your regular vehicle goes in for repair, you may not always have that luxury. In those cases you’ll want to look for advertised “last minute” specials or perhaps ask your repair shop if they have a referral discount to a rental car provider. If you’re planning ahead for your rental car, it’s best to book online to ensure the best deal. When possible, combine flight & hotel with your car rental to receive maximum discounts.

Most people fail to realize that their current auto insurance may already cover a rental vehicle. Before you pay for insurance on your rental car, check your auto insurance policy to see if you’re covered. If you are, you’ve just saved yourself one of the biggest expenses in renting a car. However, if your policy doesn’t cover rental cars, you’ll be forced to decide if you want to pay for coverage. Depending on where you’re traveling and your driving experience in those areas, you may want to consider insurance coverage on the rental car “just in case”.

When renting a car, don’t forget about the importance of insurance. Every car rental agency is bound to ask you the same question: do you want insurance? Insurance can cost as much as 50% of the total rental bill, so it is important that you understand your options when renting a car.

The first question you need to ask yourself is, do you already have insurance? If you do, odds are that you are already covered. If you are not sure, just ask! Call or email customer service and ask what their policy is for car rentals. If you are not covered by your insurance, it is advisable that you inquire what the cost would be to add that on. Often, the cost of adding car rental insurance to your existing policy is cheaper than the cost of car rental insurance through the car rental company.

If you don’t have car insurance already, then you will have to ask for insurance when you rent a car. Insurance rates vary wildly amongst the car rental agencies. For them, it’s just another upsale – for you, it may very well be your financial security. When renting a car, be sure to ask exactly what is and isn’t covered by insurance. If you don’t hesitate, ask again. The car rental company is here to make sure you can make an informed decision about insurance.

Paying for car insurance is no fun, especially for a rental. The only thing worse? Being uninsured in your rental when s something bad happens – don’t let that be you.
